(Brinda Gill) Just a Housewife- The "housewife" was an indispensable accessory for keeping track of sewing tools and storing mementos during the nineteenth century. Lynne Zacek Bassett presents a gallery of examples used by homemakers, teachers, and even a Civil War soldier that are worked in techniques as diverse as the people who carried the housewives. (Lynne Zacek Bassett) The Fashionable Embroidered Casket- Full of secret compartments to keep adolescent treasures safe, caskets were popular among young girls of the seventeenth century. This uncommonly well-preserved example from the collection of the National Museums of Scotland displays colorful embroidery.
